Special Session
Digital Systems and Services for Opening up Education (DSSOP)

Overview

Opening up education is a global movement that aims to facilitate open and flexible learning by exploring the potential of digital technologies in providing enhanced learning experiences. Initially, opening up education was addressed with the growth and widespread usage of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in the form of open academic courses and learning objects. Within this context, several OER initiatives have been developed worldwide by large organizations/institutions such as UNESCO OER Community, Open Education Europa, Carnegie Mellon Open Learning Initiative, MIT‘s OpenCourseWare (OCW), Stanford‘s iTunes and Rice University‘s Connexions or by communities (or consortia) such as MERLOT and OER Commons. Nowadays, opening up education continues to be evolving with several novel approaches to openness such as open access to educational practices, tools, services and people in an effective and interoperable manner and with a variety of devices, namely desktop, laptops and mobile devices.

This special session is intended to attract research papers on innovative digital systems and educational services for Opening up Education, in the following topics:

NB: Papers may address one or more of the above listed sub-topics, although authors should not feel limited by them. Unlisted but related sub-topics are also acceptable.

Proposals for participation in the Special Session can be submitted in the following formats:

All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. All accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings submitted to IEEE Xplore®, provided at least one author pays the registration fee before October 1st 2014.
